Footscray sits about six kilometres west of the Melbourne CBD, right on the Maribyrnong River, and it's one of the more genuinely mixed suburbs in Melbourne's inner west, older and newer housing sitting side by side. Barkly Street is the main strip, and Hopkins Street runs parallel with the market on it, both busy most days and especially on Saturdays.
The streets north of Barkly, around Lynch and Stirling, are mostly older single-storey homes on quieter, narrower blocks. Access here can be tighter than in a newer suburb, with side gates, narrow driveways, and sometimes no driveway at all, so it's worth telling your removalist about this ahead of time rather than on the day.
Closer to the station and along the river, there's a growing number of newer apartment developments, and those come with the usual high-rise considerations, lift bookings and loading dock timing. Footscray Station itself sits right in the middle of things, so anywhere near it can get busy with commuter traffic on weekday mornings and afternoons.
