Altona sits on Port Phillip Bay, roughly 13 kilometres south-west of the CBD, and it's an established, settled kind of suburb rather than a fast-growing one. You'll find older weatherboards and bungalows closer to the beach, sitting alongside high-value waterfront homes on the Esplanade and newer units nearer the station and shops.
Pier Street handles most of the day-to-day traffic, cafes and boutique shops that keep the strip busy, particularly on weekends when the beach and pier pull crowds in. A move that runs through this stretch is usually easier to schedule for a weekday or an earlier start.
Cherry Lake sits on the northern edge of the suburb, a reserve built from what used to be a swamp, and the streets nearby are wider and more modern than the older blocks near the coast. There's also an industrial patch to the north-west, near the old refinery, worth flagging if you're relocating a business in that direction.
